It’s hard being a busy mum, we eat together sometimes, and other times my husband and I eat later. It just works out easier, and part of our relaxation is eating together after the children have gone to bed. By the end of the day I’m so exhausted I don’t always have the energy to cook, or think about cooking. If I haven’t prepared anything earlier in the day, forget it. I’m lucky in that my husband is a great cook and enjoys it, so he often cooks in the evening. I was interested to try Gousto box, it promises everything you need to cook a healthy meal from scratch. One of the hassles with recipes is either buying new ingredients that you only use a small amount, or the amount of time it takes measuring everything out.
It was so exciting getting the box in the post, we went for a four person meal, so we got a large box. You can get it for two or for four. The only downside I could tell you about was the packaging – I like to do my bit for the environment, and with two lots of everything, plus the box and packaging itself, there was lots of packaging waste. Other than that, you have all you need in the box – recipe, information, and all the ingredients. The box had ice packs in, so any parts that needed to be kept cool were ok. The chicken breasts were good quality and size. The only ingredient that suffered was the spring onions, which looked a little wilted, as they weren’t kept cool. Once they were cut up and in the salad, they were absolutely fine. It was so exciting unpacking the ingredients and looking forward to cooking and enjoying the meal. There was even a wooden spoon included!
Using the Gousto box:
You need some basic cooking knowledge, but really anyone can follow the instructions. They are clear and in a relevant order. They tell you to boil the kettle and what to do when, which was really helpful. We chose the Chicken Satay meal with wholegrain rice and cucumber salad. It was plenty for four people, we had more than enough to eat. It’s a bit like making a Jamie Oliver 30 minute meal, only it really does take 30 minutes, because everything is measured out for you. I felt like I was a chef on a cooking programme, and I had the advantage, because it was bound to be tasty. The peanut sauce was delicious. We cooked the chicken on the barbecue which took it to another level of heaven. I felt virtuous having cooked from scratch a healthy and nutritious meal which tasted good, yet was easy to do.
You can change your recipes to suit your preferences, and if you subscribed regularly you would reduce your food waste, as you only use what you need for the meal.
How much does a Gousto box cost?
You can get a 2 person box from £27.49 or a Family box (2 adults and 2-3 children) from £41.99 for 2 recipes. For me it’s a little on the pricey side, but delivery is free and it’s cheaper than getting a takeaway. Here’s the link to the prices.
And how did it turn out?
Disclosure: I received the Gousto box at no cost to me, but all opinions remain my own.
